The Sacred Story of Zamzam Water: History, Importance, and Benefits

You might have seen people bringing Aab-e-Zamzam from their pilgrimage and sharing it with loved ones. This might leave you curious about what Zamzam is and why it holds such a special place in Islam. The story of Zamzam water is both fascinating and heartwarming. In this blog, we will delve into its history, meaning, significance, and benefits.

The tapestry of Islam is adorned with miracles from Allah Almighty. One such enduring miracle is the Well of Zamzam, which has been a source of sacred water for centuries. Located in Masjid Al-Haram, Makkah, Saudi Arabia, Zamzam water is believed to have gushed from the earth due to Hazrat Ismael’s (A.S.) feet. Let us explore its remarkable story.

The word ‘Zamzam’ is derived from the Arabic word ‘Zome,’ which means ‘stop flowing.’ This name originates from the incident where Hazrat Hajrah (the mother of Hazrat Ismael A.S.) exclaimed “zome zome(“stop, stop”) when the water first sprung forth. Since then, it has been called Zamzam.

The history of Zamzam dates back to Hazrat Ibrahim (A.S.)’s migration to Makkah with his wife, Hazrat Hajrah, and their infant son, Hazrat Ismael (A.S.). By Allah’s command, Hazrat Ibrahim (A.S.) left them in the barren land of Makkah with limited provisions. Trusting Allah’s plan, Hazrat Hajrah ran between the hills of Safa and Marwa in search of water, making seven trips in desperation.

During her search, water miraculously gushed from the ground where Hazrat Ismael’s heels rubbed the sand. Hazrat Hajrah made a basin around the water and exclaimed, “zome zome,” fearing it would run out. This water not only quenched their thirst but became a vital source for Makkah’s inhabitants.

After the Jurhum tribe settled in Makkah and eventually deviated from the righteous path, they plugged the well as an act of vengeance. The well was forgotten for generations.

The Zamzam well was rediscovered by Abdul Muttalib, the grandfather of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He received a divine vision guiding him to the well’s location. After persistent digging, the sacred water was unearthed once more, restoring its significance in Islam.

The Well of Zamzam is not just a source of water; it is a symbol of faith and a divine blessing. The Holy Prophet (PBUH) emphasized its importance, stating, “The best water on the face of the earth is Zamzam water. In it is food for nourishment and healing for illness” (Al-Mu’jam al-Kabiir 11011).

  1. Hazrat Ibn Abbas (R.A.) narrates: “The Messenger of Allah (PBUH) said, ‘The water of Zamzam is for whatever it is drunk for’” (Sunan Ibn Majah 3062).
  2. Hazrat Jabir Bin Abdullah (R.A.) narrates: “When you drink from it, turn to face the Qibla, mention Allah’s name, drink in three sips, and praise Allah” (Sunan Ibn Majah 3061).
  • Say Bismillah before drinking.
  • Drink with your right hand.
  • Face the Qibla while drinking.
  • Drink in three gulps as per the Sunnah.
  • Recite Alhamdulillah after drinking.
